SUSTAINABLE HEAVY-DUTY INITIATIVES FOR FUTURE TECHNOLOGY

Project

San Joaquin Valley Transit Electrification Project

The San Joaquin Valley Transit Electrification Project aimed to accelerate the deployment of heavy-duty, zero-emission public transit buses in disadvantaged communities across the San Joaquin Valley. This regional-scale effort demonstrated that California-made, battery-electric buses can effectively meet transit needs, significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and eliminate harmful air pollutants—providing critical public health benefits in one of the state’s most air-quality challenged regions. The project’s scale helped lower per-vehicle costs and created opportunities for shared infrastructure, workforce training, spare parts, and maintenance resources. It stands as a successful regional model, offering scalable lessons to guide and educate other transit agencies. These insights support broader adoption of zero-emission technologies across California’s transit sector.

Vehicles/Equipment Funded:

  • The City of Visalia Transit Division has deployed three Proterra extended-range buses and four depot-chargers.
  • Fresno County Rural Transit Agency (FCRTA) has deployed five Proterra extended-range buses and eight depot-chargers.
  • San Joaquin RTD has deployed two Proterra fast-charge buses and two overhead fast chargers.
  • The City of Modesto Transit Services has deployed five Proterra extended range buses and eight depot chargers.

Lessons Learned:

  • More time should be built into the schedule for contracting, as the process can be lengthy and cause delays.
  • Regular and clear communication between all project partners improves efficiency and project outcomes.
  • Infrastructure planning and construction should begin early, as it consistently takes longer than anticipated.

Status Updates:

  • All charging infrastructure was delivered.
  • All electric buses were deployed and provided data to third party data collector.
  • Data collection with Ricardo has concluded, and data from all partners is being analyzed.
