Project
Net-Zero Farming and Freight Facility Demonstration Project
Through this project, five zero-emission Class 8 battery electric trucks with all-electric transport refrigeration units (eTRUs) were deployed at Moonlight Companies in Reedley, California, a site located in a disadvantaged community per CalEnviroScreen 3.0.
Led by Project Clean Air, Inc., the Net-Zero Farming and Freight Facility Demonstration Project was developed in partnership with HummingbirdEV, Moonlight Companies, Volta Air, and TechTruth Consulting. The project received strong support from the agriculture industry, public health officials, educators, and clean air advocates. Each partner played a key role in deploying advanced clean technologies and demonstrating scalable, medium- and heavy-duty electric trucks. These vehicles are now helping reduce emissions in agricultural freight operations across California’s Central Valley.
Vehicles/Equipment Funded:
The demonstrated technologies included the electrification of Class 8 trucks and transport refrigeration units (TRUs).
Five Class 8 trucks were designed and developed as fully battery-electric vehicles for agricultural fruit transport.
Five TRU boxes were purpose-built as battery-electric eTRUs for moving fruit between packing facilities and cold storage warehouses.
Each Class 8 electric truck was paired with an eTRU to create a fully zero-emission refrigerated transport unit, serving the first 5 to 15 miles of agricultural freight movement to market.
Project Goals:
Customize, manufacture, and deploy five all-electric class 8, single vehicle 3-axle trucks rated to 54,000 GVWR and eTRUs.
Demonstrate the functionality and GHG emissions reductions of the electric fleet, specifically in disadvantaged communities.
Create a market for all-electric, heavy-duty TRUs in the agriculture and freight industries by improving existing
technology.
The farm freight demonstration is expected to support technology transfer to other types of agricultural operations.
The eTRUs are expected to reduce NOx by 1.359 tons per year (0.2718 tons per vehicle) and GHG by 197.45 metric tons/year (39.49 metric tons/vehicle).
Status Updates:
Contract kick-off was in May 2019.
Successfully developed, deployed, and demonstrated five electric trucks equipped with electric TRUs.
HummingbirdEV is committed to keeping all five of the demonstration trucks in service and will continue to collect in-field operating data.
