SUSTAINABLE HEAVY-DUTY INITIATIVES FOR FUTURE TECHNOLOGY

Project

Glendale Green Zone Construction Work Crew Project

The Glendale Municipal Green Zone Construction Work Crew project, led by CTE, aims to pilot four types of heavy-duty electric vehicles (EVs) and equipment to evaluate the practicality and performance of innovative zero-emission technologies in construction applications. As part of this effort, the City of Glendale will acquire and deploy a fully electric construction fleet—including a dump truck, excavator, pickup truck, and mini wheel loader. This fleet will operate as a coordinated work crew on various infrastructure projects across the Glendale city limits, helping to demonstrate the feasibility of clean construction equipment in real-world municipal settings.

Expected Benefits:

This project will deploy clean construction technology across Glendale’s disadvantaged communities to improve air quality and public health. Benefits include:
  • Reduction of 414 metric tons of CO₂e (carbon dioxide equivalent).
  • Reduction of 4,584 pounds of NOx (nitrogen oxides).
  • Reduction of 59 pounds of DPM (diesel particulate matter).
  • Reduction of 43 pounds of PM2.5 (particulate matter ≤2.5 microns).
  • Reduction of 73 pounds of ROG (reactive organic gases).
  • Improved local air quality.
  • Decreased health risks in overburdened neighborhoods.

Outreach/Workforce Components:

Fleet operators and technicians will receive comprehensive training through a virtual fleet training program and in-person vehicle workshops. Workforce development efforts will focus on hiring and training individuals from AB 1550 and SB 535 priority populations, with additional emphasis on education, outreach, and awareness around clean vehicle technologies and fueling infrastructure.
